Clare Ave Extension
Welland
Project scope
In the fall of 2015 Coldstream Concrete supplied a project to Gibbons Contracting Ltd in the City of Welland, Ontario. It consisted of a double run – open bottom box culvert with a span of 7.316m and a rise of 1.524m. The 9.0m wide road joined two subdivisions together in an area with extreme high water tables and poor soils. This all precast job consisted of 24 precast footing units, 24 precast open bottom box units and 8 different sized wing wall units.
The total precast installation time in late fall was 3 days.
Bridge 417 – Thompson Line
Bridge 417 – Thompson Line
Central Elgin County
On October 15, 2015 Coldstream Concrete supplied an open bottom precast culvert that had a 11.5m span and 3.5m rise to the County of Central Elgin. Relatively dry conditions were very helpful during the installation due to the size of the watercourse and excavation. The culvert consisted of 15 units to create a 16m wide roadway. This single structure replaced a design for a dual box culvert. This is turn reduced the total project cost and created better watercourse flow. Coldstream also supplied precast concrete footings.
The total installation time for footing and bridge elements was under 2 day.
Chinnick Drain and Pump Station
Chinnick Drain and Pump Station
Mun. Chatham Kent
In June 2015 Coldstream Concrete supplied 2 large pump stations that were 7.2m x 3.8m x 6.2m deep to the Chinnick Drain and Pump project in the Municipality of Chatham Kent. These chambers house pump intakes and collect water from the Chinnick Drain which is then pumped into Lake St. Clair. The entire one end was open to receive water from the drain. Due to the high water levels buoyancy issues had to be considered. The 3 walled chamber caused structural problems. This was remedied by inserting 25m rebar into preformed vertical tubes that extended through all the riser sections, base and cap. This created horizontal and vertical reinforcing grid and joined all the elements together. Each chamber consisted of 9 units. All 18 united were installed in the winter with water issue over 1.5 days.
Ormston Subdivision, Kitchener
PRECAST CONCRETE INLET TRENCH
On May 23, 2018 Coldstream Concrete Ltd. supplied a seven-piece precast concrete trench complete with approach slabs and maintenance chamber to the Ormston Subdivision in Kitchener, Ontario. The trench and all of its components were constructed using epoxy reinforcement and came equipped with concrete corbels on either side to support the precast approach slabs. Each trench piece has 6 separate galvanized steel angles cast into the concrete corners for protection and roadway grating.
The trench was installed and backfilled in less than two days.
Fleming Road, Plympton-Wyoming
PRECAST CONCRETE CULVERT
On July 11th Coldstream Concrete Ltd. supplied a 12-piece “all skewed box culvert” for the town of Plympton-Wyoming. Each piece of he 3.6m span by 2.1m rise box culvert was constructed on a 30-degree skew. This was done in order to avoid large/heavy end units which are typical for precast skewed end culverts. Due to the fact that all pieces where designed to the same physical dimension (without large heavy end units) all 12 pieces were installed quickly and safely by 2pm the day they were delivered.
Grey Rd 10, Grey County
On June 19th 2018 Coldstream Concrete Ltd. supplied a ten-piece open-bottom precast concrete culvert to Wayne Schwartz Construction Ltd. (Miller Group) in Grey County, Ontario.
The culvert spans 5.5m and sits 2.5m tall. In typical precast fashion it was installed in less than one day, resulting in shorter road closure times for the public.
The second phase is set to be installed in mid August which includes a second precast culvert with similar properties of 10 + 590.
Rock Glen Road
On September 14, 2018, Coldstream Concrete Ltd. supplied a large box culvert (6m span x 2.4m rise) to the Municipality of Lambton Shores. The culvert consisted of 8 standard box units weighing 83,400 lbs each, and 1 end unit with a skew of 35o weighing 87,600 lbs. The skewed end unit was surrounded on both sides by the London Boulder Block retaining wall system (also produced by Coldstream Concrete). This system always provides an easy and decorative finish to any culvert. All 9 pieces were installed in half a day, and back-filled later the same day. The waterway was back up and running by the start of the following day.
Edgevalley Subdivision
During the 2018 summer months, Coldstream Concrete Ltd. supplied custom heavy precast and underground site servicing products to the northeast corner of London, Ontario. Middlesex Centre Firehall
Middlesex Centre, Ontario
Project scope
Back in May 2016, Coldstream Concrete Ltd. supplied three 50,000L water reservoir tanks to Middlesex Centre’s new firehall. This hall is believed to be the first net-zero carbon neutral fire station in Canada. Once installed the tanks were connected to meet the water requirements of the new hall.
Aarcon Excavating and Modern Crane placed and backfilled all three tanks in two days. To avoid flotation issues Coldstream Concrete cast these tanks with oversized mono bases in lieu of a cast-in-place slab that was originally specified.
Bradley Creek
Bradley Creek
Aylmer, Ontario
Project scope
On November 3, 2016, Coldstream Concrete Ltd. supplied the second half of this three-sided open-bottom culvert to the town of Aylmer in Elgin County. The culvert spans 6.0 metres wide and is a low earth cover design. Due to existing hydro conduits three of the culvert pieces had to be “skated” into position after they were lowered into the excavation. Gary D. Robinson Contracting installed the precast footings and culvert pieces, ensuring minimal disturbance to the waterway. The finished product can be viewed just south of Fath Avenue and John St. South.
Mollard Line
On March 7th Coldstream Concrete Ltd. supplied a fourteen-piece “ALL SKEW” precast concrete box culvert to Cope Construction in South Huron, Ontario. The culvert end treatments are comprised of 128 precast concrete retaining wall blocks.
Sewer Upgrades & Road Widening | Fanshawe Park Road
In November of 2017, Land Development Solutions (LDS) presented a project that required a large 3.0m diameter maintenance hole to be put in one of the busiest commuter routes into the City of London. The project was finally awarded to CH Excavating (2013) in the Spring of 2019. In May 2019, Fanshawe Park Road West was closed in London, ON for approximately two weeks to allow for sewer upgrades, road widening and the connection of new services to a new proposed gas station just west of Hyde Park Road. The proposed 3.0m diameter maintenance hole in the roadway required a doghouse-style opening to be placed over top of an existing 2.2m (outside diameter) concrete pipe, to allow connection for a proposed 0.525m concrete pipe flowing into the existing storm system. Although the project specifications asked for a 3.0m diameter circular maintenance hole to be used for this application, Coldstream Concrete Ltd. advised the project engineers of their concerns of using a 3.0m diameter maintenance hole, suggesting that the structure will not be large enough to be structurally sound under the busy roadway.
William Street | Exeter, Ontario
Did you know you can build a 10.0m deep pump station in 6 hours or less? Stone Town Construction and Coldstream Concrete Ltd. teamed up and did just this on October 15th, 2019. The 6.2m wide by 5.3m long superload chamber was installed in the town of Exeter. This 9-piece custom precast structure features an internal wall and platform and can be viewed directly off of Highway #4.

Colonel Talbot Pump Station
On January 21st and 22nd, Coldstream Concrete Ltd. supplied an eight-piece, custom precast concrete pump chamber to R. Russell Construction just south of Southdale Rd. in London, Ontario. The chamber was one of our largest ever, having internal dimensions of 7.0m x 4.0m x 10.0m deep. Pieces weighed from 84,000 lbs up to 104,000 pounds. All eight precast sections were delivered with a police escort to protect motorists. Internal walls and platforms were monolithically cast where required.
Oily & Storm Water Sump Pit | Sarnia, ON
Curran Contractors installed this 8-piece chamber with a seperate lid to extend over 4 middle sections of the chamber. The inside dimensions were 3.8m tall x 3m wide and its total length was 11.3m long. The three-sided pieces were built with an open top and went to a chemical refinery near Sarnia. The contractor had to pour concrete around the outside of the chamber as well as finish the inside floor. This went into an old Oily Water Separator Holding Tank which has now been redesigned into an inflow Oily & Storm Water sump pit.
Foxwood Subdivision, London, ON
